What happens when one of the most famous pirates ends up in a time warp? In Richard Powell’s, A Rescue in Time, Jean Laffite and his crew end up in Memphis Tennessee with first-mate, Gil Jarvis, on a Mississippi River tugboat as their guide through time. Jarvis, who wants to make a career move, gets his wish to be more than “some water born truck driver,” in a way he never imagined in his wildest dreams. Jarvis’ character develops nicely as a normal person dealing with survival in an unfamiliar world. Powell’s attention to detail in his historical facts and location descriptions, are woven into plausible fiction as the pirates sail through the fog bank that catapults them into the 21 st century. The reader is then transported back to mid-19 th century New Orleans and the famed voodoo queen, Marie Laveau, invoking her voodoo spells to help spend the crew home. . This fanciful adventure into quantum physics is great quarantine reading and a must for alternative history buffs. The novel speaks to the pirate in all of us and satisfies the craving we have to go back to the past and to see the future
